Deck Cleaning and Sealing St. Louis: Carpenter bees work for themselves. In spite of their name, carpenter bees do not build decks; they destroy them!
Carpenter bees are a summer pest found throughout much of the southern and eastern United States. They resemble bumblebees, but they have smooth and shiny abdomens rather than hairy abdomens, and they have no pollen baskets on their hind legs.
Carpenter bees are not usually serious pests, although their tunnels can be damaging if the bees infest the wood annually to nest. The original hole is perfectly round and approximately a half inch in diameter. The tunnel turns at a right angle after penetrating the length of the bee’s body and runs across the grain of the wood.
To control the carpenter bees, an insecticide can be injected into the tunnel, plugged with caulk, and then the entry hole surface treated so that the bees do not use it again the following year. A thicker paint film, pressure preservative treatments, screens and tight-fitting doors can help prevent nesting.
Wood that has been pressure treated with preservatives such as borax or high retention levels of waterborne preservatives is resistant to attack. Interior, unpainted wood surfaces can be protected by keeping windows and doors closed or screened during the spring and summer months to prevent the bees from nesting in your home.
